It's really not that hard at all. You can pick up a beginner's guitar for really cheap. It won't last you but about a year, but it's great to start on. I still have my first bass. It sounds like an elephant's fart when I play it, but its sentimental value is pricless.

I am totally self taught with bass guitar, but I play saxophone too, and have been for 8 years.
