Yeah, i got here from addictinggames too! And you're right, this is nothing like the stuff they usually post!

Did you know they posted a demo for this game (or at least it plays exactly the same) a while back. It was single-player and slightly stacked for the comp...they had a cleric and you had a healer (one person only) but it was fun. I was hoping I'd see more of it and here it is!

Well, I tried the demo, Tactics Core, that i thought was for this game, and in retrospect it doesn't seem a whole lot like this. There is no block chances, HPs are in the quadruple digits and damages are in the triple, Clerics only heal one unit but they heal from range instead of a Healer who has to be adjacent, and there are no duplicates of units (everything is different). It's also a lot prettier. But again with the server issues, huh?

It is by the same java company or whatever (the little flashing logo is the same), but I find it hard to believe that Tactics Core turned into Tactics Arena because they seem a heck of a lot different. The only similarities I can discern in terms of units are the Hunter (Scout), the Red Mage (super powerful pyromancer) and the Cleric.

Maybe an admin can tell me if its actually a prototype.

There's no reason that the units in one have to be the same as the units in the other version. You'll notice that the actual battle system is designed the same way though. Tactics core came with the disclaimer that it was merely a demonstration of the system, and not a full blown version of the entire game, after all.
Anyways, Seed (who's the Architect) (ie. designer fellow) hooked both of them up, so i'd assume they're basically off the same idea

besides, TC is prettier cuz it's singleplayer, backgrounds in the mulitplayer would just take up space and development time at the moment, as this release is obviously not the final version. (ah the joy of online gaming)

anyways, it doesnt really matter anyhow...

Yeah I came over from addictinggames, too. I signed up for gold, too.
Paypal isn't as confusing as you'd think. I was actually pretty wary at first at how the whole system works, but Bills explained it real well and I would recomend to anyone to sign up. I can't wait for my golems!!

Heh, ok I made both TC and TAO, and they are in the same line.
Tactics Core is a game engine. Make some graphics, slap it on, and you can make a new game! Get some WC sprites, slap it on, and you've got turn based Warcraft (just an example~)!

After I released the TC Demo, it spread pretty quickly, and I got flooded with emails with feedback etc. Until I just abandoned by old domain and started a new one quietly. Then, I took half a year to upgrade the TC engine, and a lot of the things added came from the feedback email suggestions, including blocking, facing, multiplayer etc.

Using the new engine, I created new graphics, and made TAO. So TAO is running on the TC engine, an upgraded version of the one from the TC Demo.

by the way Seed: I played TC a long time ago (must have been when you first made it public) and I have to say TAO is LEAPS AND BOUNDS above what TC was. Although I really liked the concepts in TC, it always left me wanting more and in the way the game played I could tell that something bigger was around the corner. Great job on making the engine as good as it is today.
