View Full Version : A "spectator" function
Hey, all you TAO netheads!
I'm an experienced MMOG player, and play many games where you can be a spectator, or watch other people play as they are in the middle of a game.
However, TAO doesn't seem to have this function! Who else thinks TAO needs a spectator function? I do, of course; I wouldn't have started this thread otherwise!

This has been talked about before, it's not good to watch, cause then you can learn everyone's settup, see their stratagy, and then play them with a huge advantage.

Oh well! Thank you for showing me the light of this idea, Tama!

Ignore the skeptics.
(looks significantly at Tama)
I believe we have found the one orrigonal idea ever suggested on these forums. It's brilliant. Ingenious even. I say we make him a Mod. ASAP, that way we can listen to all of his orrigonal suggestions :p

Except for the fact that it has been suggested a billion times before.
And a spectator function would be just dandy. So people learn, so people are forced to evolve and get better... oh woe is the gamer.
Moved to suggestions forum.

Spectating is perfectly fine. The points brought up by Tama Drummer aren't anything to worry about, especially among serious players who can learn to adapt. The real problem here is a case of developer laziness, so I suppose we won't be seeing that, or any other features anytime soon.

I agree with you jack, 'cept for the fact that this has been suggested a million times before.
Phantasy Star Onine III C.A.R.D. is a strategy card/board online game. It has a spectator function, even though it causes the same drawbacks that the function would have in TAO. You see what kind of deck your potential opponent has.
EDIT: darn you guys beat me to the post.

The servers are already strained with people playing let alone coming to watch. Unless we see some serious server upgrades the spectator dream is one of little momentum. I think it's a good idea if you wanted to say hi to someone in a game that isn't in your clan or if two awesome players were going up at it i would love to watch and learn from them but i think for now it's very unlikely.
Prove me wrong Seed. Prove me wrong.

If there was a function which allowed the participants in the game a chance to both agree to let someone watch, that would be fine. Spying would not be cool.
Wonder how many more times this will be suggested?

lol, i think the actual reason is hasn't been implemented isn't because u can see someone's strategy (guess what..u can do that by playing them..*gasp*)
I think its simply too difficult to program that sort of option into the flashplayer system here. Unless the setup for the original program left it more open ended on users that could access a arena, AND whether or not it was even possible to view a feed on a match without being a participant, it could involve completely re-writing the entire game to do it.

Some one else on these forums used to spell mock mauk. . .
Also, why in a batle does it say "2 Players in Arena" I always thought that was there for when they implemented a spectator function.

my best guess is that is does this because it uses a lot of the same code for the player listing in the lobby, its the same format, buttons (2 buttons with different functions) etc. so Seed probably just didnt bother to remove the peices of code that counted # of players and then displayed that number for everyone to see above the player listing
but thats just a guess :D
