How is the scoring done, when determining rank? It looks kinda random to me right now......

It would seem that games are for a total of 32 pts. If the two players have equal rating, they both risk 16 pts in a winner-takes-all bout. The amount of points risked goes up or down by 1 by a difference of 25 ratings, to a minimum of zero and maximum of 32. If the game ends as a draw, each player gets the average of the results of a win and a loss.

For example, if two players face each other at a bout, one with rating 1,000 and one with rating 1,200, there's a difference of 200 pts in ratings. Divided by 25 gives eight. So, the points risked are:

lower-rated player: 16 - 8 = 8
higher-rated player: 16 + 8 = 24

The results would be, for the lower-rated player:
* lower-rated player wins: 1000 - 8 + 32 = 1024
* lower-rated player loses: 1000 - 8 = 992
* draw: (1024 + 992) / 2 =1008

The formula predicts these correctly. However, for the higher-rated player, things get a bit messy.

* win: 1200 - 24 +32 = 1208 (actual: 1205)
* loss: 1200 - 24 = 1186 (actual: 1183)
* draw: (1205 + 1183) / 2 = 1194 (correct)

Apparently there's a damper effect here to make bottom feeding harder?

No wonder there's such a clump around 1200 and 1400. It's like a hill that gets steeper at those two points. So people can get just about to that point, but it's harder to keep getting higher.

I'm not a math major, but apparently that new math really has me all messed up. I could have sworn that 1200-24 was 1176. I need to go get me edjumacated again.

xerent is on a role tonight. Yeah, I was kinda glad when we moved away from that crappy WLD system. People were even larger stat whores, because losses were so permanent.
