View Full Version : Banner Size

Just a friendly reminder on banner sizes out there. Some banners are overly large, while others are numerous in nature. This really hasn't been a huge problem, but with more and more people coming to the forums, We thought it would be good to set some guidelines.
All in all, just use your common sense. Use these following guidelines if you still have quesitons.
A) Keep it to one banner
B) 600 width x 140 height maximum (keep it friendly for our low-res members)
C) Nothing Obscene or vulgar. Keep it PG-13.
D) There is no size limitation if your banner sports a Greek salad, imported from Greek.

I've noticed that people seem to think that because only banners are mentioned here that they can add as much text as they want to their signature.
Having one or 2 lines of text in addition to a banner is okay. However, anything more than that is just excessive.

Not only is it too large, but there is really no need for more than one banner. Remember guideline A?

Try to make banners of reasonable size, not too heavy on space and around the 100-150 pixels.

Your sub zero part is really laggy and sketchy, I could make a custom little Sub Zero thing for you if you want in flash.
Is my banner too hi resolution? I mean, I'd hate to have to lower the quality of it and risk being seen as less of a player because my banner doesn't crash 75% of our users like other people's do. Hey, know what? I'll finish this post later, I have to go buy a new Suburban. Ya see, my neighbor keeps buying brand new cars, and I wouldn't want anyone else on the block to think I don't make as much money as he does, so every time he does it, I do it too. It's just the wife and I, but we are now the proud owners of 7 fine automobiles, and we only had to refinance the house 4 times to do it!
think about it...
Also! I almost forgot this part. I read the forums at work. When people look over my shoulder and see the banners with half naked women, I get some strange looks. Now don't get me wrong, I appreciate the female body as much as the next guy, but looking at that should be a matter of personal choice as to the when and where, and not displayed in the forum unless it's under a thread with an appropriate warning in the title. For example, I'd never open the pictures thread at work because I can reasonably assume there will be a risque photo or 2 in there. I'll save that one for hoime, but the rest of the forum should be boss friendly.

I think it is sad tyhat those who know about the limits purposefully make their banner just slightly bigger than it. When questioned, they respond with "it's not as bad as some people's"
That and the over use of animations is just plain rediculous.
"Gee guys, i bet you never saw a banner with animaion before! I'll make mine flashy and own you all!"
Makes me wish they just diabled banners sometimes.

You know there is a problem when your banner takes up more space than your actual post.
Just the banner would be okay... but not with the text too.

I keep my banners small in both size and animation. My banners aren't sitting there flashing and giving you a seizure. You can simply turn off sigs if it's that much of a problem for you dial-up users. My banners are limited always to 300x100. I have another banner next to it that's 200x100. I have the smallest text size below it and it takes up one line. God, people whine too much.

Office_Shredder
09-07-2004, 02:21 PM
No, he's saying that people think too highly of animated banners.
And APZ, personally I have no problem with your banner, it's the fact that everyone seems to want a 600x200 banner with flashing colors and fireworks, accompanied by War and Peace and select parts of Webster's dictionary (namely the S and T sections)
Jeffery
09-07-2004, 03:20 PM
I agree. APZ has always limited his banner quite efficiently.
The complaints are not aimed at you APZ, but at the over use of the overlarge and aniamted banners.
Walrus, your attempt at argument is thin here. No one is denying anyone their "right" to a banner, or animated banner.
But the use of huge banners that take forever to load is frowned upon. Go get indignant somewhere else.
Walrus
09-08-2004, 07:01 AM
there you go again trying to make it sound like im causing some sort of argument.
it was simply the fact that when only a few people had animated banners, no1 cared, and people thought they were cool. now lots more people have em and suddenly people begin to get fussed.
if there are people who like seeing the banners and stuff, they will.
if you dont think much of banners, turn em off.

Mine takes up basically as much space as your text does so i c no problem.
Jeffery
09-11-2004, 01:13 AM
Did you mean basically same by over twice the amount of verticl inches on the screen, or same by the hundreds of kb's your banners are compaired to my dozens of kb's in my siggy?
Either way yours is MUCH larger than mine.
Now, if you listened to the guidelines, and used ONE banner, you would be right. But since your special, and think Xerent is someone you can ignore, I am sure your overuse of banners is perfectly fine.

What's so important about having a banner anyway? What new information can you supply to us than we already know? We know your SN. We know your signature. We know you play TAO. What else is truly necessary? (Unless it's a huge picture of a greek salad, imported from Greece)

While I do believe your salad is a Greek Salad, I don't think it fits both qualifications of the stipulation. Xerent said that it must be a Greek salad imported from Greece. Your salad is way to fresh to be imported from Greece. It looks like it was made in the restaurant just minutes before the picture was taken. So your banner is in violation of the rules.
Thank you, come again.
Edit: Other defense of broken stipulations:
If this picture was actually taken in Greece (which I doubt by the English lettering and not Greek lettering), then it failed to be exported from Greece to be imported elsewhere. You cannot import within your own country. That is just called a delivery.
xerent
09-13-2004, 06:25 PM
Actually, if you read carefully, I SPECIFICALLY stated size specifications, except if sporting a greek salad, made in Greek. That salad is clearly from Greece, making it invalid.
