I was hoping for a drop around 4am, missed it while dickering around with my setup, but decided to go ahead and see what kind of people play at 4am anyway. To my surprise, I got challenged by ~RidersofRohan~ whom I've known as an *excellent* grey that I remember only because I've lost to him so many times. On just seeing the name, the first thing I said was, "Oh no, not YOU again!" Then, I blinked when I saw the dragons and golems and beasties (oh my!). Yes, he'd gone gold. Not only was I seemingly outmatched but outclassed as well. I considered just surrendering but I decided to fight like a cornered animal.
I knew my only chance was to launch an all-out attack frm the start, and thankfully had 3 knights, 2 witches and a scout on the front lines. With a little luck, I managed to bag his scout and his beastrider, but my own scout and witches were dead, and he had grown a nice forest of shrubs. Then, I saw that with my ranged attackers gone, those shrubs were more of a liability to him, and his dragon was too far away to stop my enchantress and barrier from safely paralyzing his only knight. I luckily have all my knights left, but two are paralyzed and one in critical condition. He wasted some time marching his furgon around, and by the time he makes his move for my wounded knight my chantress was ready to strike.
That was the turning point of the game. He now had NO units capable of winning except the frosty, and it was stuck behind a forest. At this point he offered a draw, but I knew the fight was mine. It took an exceedingly long time to hack his stone-armored dragon to pieces with a lone knight, and then I was free to release the other knight I had to have paralyzed.
At this point, he realized the end was near and surrendered, although I'm sure he could have delayed the game almost indefinitely if he wanted. I would have been happy beating him as a grey, but beating him as a gold deserves a forum post, because it probably won't happen again. I think I can chalk it up to him being a new gold and not knowing how to use furgons optimally; you agree? At any rate, a skilled opponent, an intense fight, and a memorable victory!
