These forrest dwellers are normaly peaceful creatures, their brute strength and inteligence is unrivaled in the beast kingdom.
What makes them so deadly is their strength,speed, and durability. They have many uses on the battlefield, but don't usualy stand against knights very well.

Actually, this is about equal to a knight. It can deal damage nearly as fast as an assassin (about 90%), with back attacks. Its blocking is not significantly lower, and its HP is better. Granted, a knight is guaranteed a win against this with cleric backup, but then this unit hurts a cleric more than a knight does - so it will do OK going straight for the cleric in that situation, provided it has a cleric of its own.

Also, doesn't the DT count as a beast? It's way stronger than the Savage.

As for the basic factors:
Creativity, good
Originality, no; the stats are standard melee and the ability has been used before.
Balance: Yes. The higher wait balances the higher movement, while the lower health balances the higher power. The range isn't much to speak of.
Tactics: No, it's just one more melee unit...

and what i mean scb is brute "mele" strength. It is true scb....DT OWNS

but this mele charater realy can be a defensive force, it could sit backrow, then move forward and hit on the diagonal ( total range..5 or could be counted 6!) for anyone that want's to magebomb!.....easily gets flank on knights and its a good FOCUS BREAKER!. and a cleric killer it is! if opponents cleric is huddled in corner SAVAGE could cover ground in 2 turns and then BLAST THE CLERIC with a diagonal PUNCH! it's versatility is great! I'm sure it would compliment the DT very well. It truly has knockout power.

Against a mage bomb, it won't be any more effective than a knight, especially against DSMs that can kill it in two hits wihtout a heal. Hitting on the diagonal is weak because it will always be a front attack. This will only be more effective than a knight in running past an attacking pyro to back attack where a knight would get a side attack - small compensation for a higher wait that will force you to dedicate more units to the same region. Where a knight gets a front attack, this unit does no better.

I'll have to concede it's a good cleric killer. Is that what we want? it seems like they are all over the place...
