What is the point of being in a clan? I could never understand why a person would join one.

It's just like having a group of friends, meet ppl and do all those things jay listed.

You couldnt start off talking to everyone who plays the game (wouldnt want to either) so start with a small group.

Set up a web site. Maybe have a shared blog for discussions. Not sure if they make IRC for your Mac, but that's a good way to get a group online live.
